Brief History of Peugeot
Peugeot was originally founded in the 19th century by the Peugeot family of Valentigney. The company started as a manufacturing business transitioning from coffee, pepper and salt grinders to umbrella frames, saw blades, wire wheels and then into bicycles before finally moving into cars. The car and bicycle companies split in 1926.
Armand Peugeot met with Gottlieb Daimler (the founder of Daimler) to discuss the automotive industry and was subsequently convinced it was a viable business. He went on to produce the first ever Peugeot automobile in 1889. It was a three wheeled steam powered car designed by Leon Serpollet, (only 4 were made). The steam powered car was quickly scrapped and a new petrol car which was built by Panhard under Daimler license.
In 1896 the first Peugeot engines were built designed by Rigoulot. This ended Peugeots reliance on Daimler. In 1896 Armand Peugeot also started a new company called Societe Anonyme des Automobiles Peugeot which broke away from the original Peugeot Family business called Les Fils de Peugeot Freres. Armand built a new factory in Audincourt for the sole purpose of car production.
In 1903 Peugeot began producing motorcycles. While in 1910 A new factory was opened in Sochaux which would later become Peugeots main production factory.
Eottori Bugatti designed a car for Peugeot called "bebe", he would later found the famous car company Buggati.
In 1934 Peugeot produced the world's first convertible retractable hardtop, the 402 BL Eclipse Decapotable.
Peugeot ought 30% of Citroen in 1974 and bought it completely in 1975 with large sums of money from the French government. The joint parent company of the Peugeot and Citroen became known as the Peugeot Societe Anonyme group (PSA). In 1978 the group took over the Chrysler European division. A new brand was created for the Chrysler division called "Talbot" this was short lived though and stopped in 1987 for passenger cars and in 1994 for commercial vehicles. Between 1980 and 1985 the PSA group lost money.
