Used Car Finance in Castleford
Finding the right used car is one part of the job. Paying for it in a way that suits your budget is the other. At Peter Ambrose, we can introduce you to finance options for our used cars, and our friendly, family-run team will explain how each one works in plain English, so you know exactly what you’re agreeing to before you sign.
Whether you’re buying your first car, upgrading your family SUV or moving to hybrid or electric, spreading the cost can make the car you want more affordable. We’ll talk through your options without pressure, using real figures for the car you’re interested in.
Finance is subject to status. Terms and conditions apply. UK residents only, 18s or over. Guarantees may be required.
Your Used Car Finance Options
There’s no single best way to pay for a car. The right choice depends on your budget, how much you drive, and whether you want to own the car outright at the end. Depending on your circumstances and the lender’s criteria, the options we can discuss include Hire Purchase and Personal Contract Purchase.
Hire Purchase (HP)
Hire Purchase is one of the simplest ways to finance a car. You pay a deposit, then make fixed monthly payments over an agreed term. Once you’ve made all the payments, the car is yours.
HP may suit you if:
- You want to own the car at the end of the agreement
- You’d like a straightforward arrangement with no final payment to plan for
- You drive high mileage, as HP has no annual mileage limit
- You want to keep the car for the long term
With HP, the car is not legally yours until the final payment has been made, and the lender has an interest in the car until then. Monthly payments are often higher than on a PCP for the same car, because you’re paying off its full value over the term.
Personal Contract Purchase (PCP)
A PCP is designed to keep monthly payments lower. Instead of paying off the whole value of the car, you pay off the amount it’s expected to lose in value over the agreement, plus interest. At the end, you have three choices:
- Pay the final amount (sometimes called the optional final payment) and keep the car
- Return the car to the lender, subject to the agreement’s conditions
- Part exchange the car and put any value in it towards your next one
PCP may suit you if:
- You’d like lower monthly payments
- You like to change your car every few years
- You stay within an agreed annual mileage
- You keep your car in good condition
A PCP comes with conditions, such as a mileage limit and the car being returned in fair condition, and charges can apply if you go over or if there is damage beyond fair wear and tear. We’ll explain these clearly before you commit.
Which Is Right for You?
Which options are available depends on the car you choose and whether you’re accepted by a lender.
Deposits and Terms
Two things shape your monthly payments more than anything else: the deposit you put down and the length of the agreement.
A larger deposit means you borrow less, so your monthly payments are generally lower. A longer term spreads the cost out, which can reduce payments, but you may pay more in interest overall. A shorter term usually means higher payments, but less interest in total. We’ll show you how different combinations affect the figures so you can choose what works for you.
Requirements vary by lender and by agreement, so speak to our team about what applies to the car you want.
Put Your Current Car Towards the Deposit
If you have a car to part exchange, its value can go towards your deposit and reduce the amount you need to finance. Get an instant estimate with our online valuation tool, then bring your car in for a full appraisal.
If you still owe money on your current car, we can request a settlement figure from your lender and take it into account. Let us know when you get in touch.

- Choose your car. Browse our used cars or ask our team to help you find the right one.
- Talk to us about your budget. Tell us what you’d like to pay each month, and we’ll explain the options available.
- Apply. We’ll introduce you to a lender, who will assess your application.
- Get a decision. If you’re accepted, we’ll go through your agreement with you before you sign.
- Drive away. We’ll prepare your car for handover and make sure you’re happy with everything.
What You’ll Need
To make your application as quick as possible, it helps to have:
- Your full, valid driving licence
- Proof of address
- Details of your employment and income
- Your bank details
The lender may ask for further information depending on your circumstances.
Before You Sign
Finance is a serious commitment, so take the time to understand it. Before you sign, make sure you know:
- The total amount you’ll repay, not just the monthly figure
- The length of the agreement and the number of payments
- Any mileage limit, final payment or charges that could apply
- What happens if you want to end the agreement early
Our team will go through each of these with you. If anything is unclear, ask. We’d rather you understood fully than signed in a hurry.
Used Car Finance FAQs
Can I get finance if I’m not sure about my credit history?
Every application is assessed individually by the lender and is subject to status. Speak to our team, and we’ll explain what to expect.
Can I finance a used car and part exchange my current car?
Yes. The value of your part exchange can go towards your deposit.
What’s the difference between HP and PCP?
With HP, you pay off the whole car over the term and own it at the end. With PCP, monthly payments are usually lower, and at the end you can pay a final amount to keep the car, return it, or use its value towards another one.
Is there a mileage limit?
Not with HP. A PCP has an agreed annual mileage limit, and excess charges can apply if you go over it.
Will applying for finance affect my credit score?
A lender may carry out credit checks as part of your application. Ask us before you apply and we’ll explain what to expect.
Do I need a deposit?
Requirements vary by lender and agreement. Talk to us about the options.
Are you a lender?
No. We act as a credit broker, not a lender. We introduce you to a selected panel of lenders, and they decide whether to offer you finance.
Can I settle my agreement early?
This depends on your agreement. We’ll explain your rights and any costs before you sign.
